Meaningful Sympathy Messages
A message becomes meaningful when it contains something only you could have written. These are longer lines for people you actually know — and a method for making one of your own.
The method, in one line
Name the person, name one specific thing, offer one specific act. Everything else is padding.
- 1
Name + a small true detail + a dated offer. "I am so sorry about Ray. He is the only person who ever got me to enjoy fishing. I will bring dinner on Thursday."
- 2
If you cannot manage all three, do the first two and stop.
For someone you are close to
- 3
I have been trying to write this for three days and everything sounds wrong, so I am sending it wrong. I loved him too and I am so sorry.
- 4
You have lost the person who knew the whole story. I do not think there is a way round that and I am not going to pretend there is.
- 5
I keep expecting to see her at the door with too much food. I am so sorry, and I am not going anywhere.
- 6
The world got noticeably worse this week and I wanted you to know that other people can feel it too.
- 7
I will not ask how you are. I will just keep turning up until you tell me to stop, and probably a bit after that.
- 8
He made you funny. Whatever else happens, that is yours now and nobody can take it back.
When you want to say what they meant
- 9
Your mother taught me that you can be kind and still say no. I use it every week and I always think of her.
- 10
There are three things I do properly in this life and your dad taught me two of them.
- 11
She is the reason I went back to college. I never told her that and I am sorry I did not.
- 12
Every time I make that soup I am going to be thinking of her, which means it will be quite often.
When you are far away
- 13
I hate that I am not there. I will be on the phone at whatever hour suits you, including the bad ones.
- 14
I cannot be at the service but I will be thinking about you all at eleven.
- 15
Distance is the only reason I am not at your door. Tell me what to send and I will send it.
Questions people actually ask
How do I make a sympathy message sound sincere?
Include one detail that could not appear in anyone else’s card — a habit, a phrase, a Sunday. Sincerity is specificity; there is no other reliable route to it.
How long should a heartfelt sympathy message be?
Four or five sentences at most. Past that it becomes a letter, which is a lovely thing to send later but not what a card is for.
