The note itself

Dear name,

Thank you very much for the gift. Where it is going, or what you will do with it.

Thank you also for the years, the help, the company — the gift was generous but the eleven years were the real thing.

With thanks and best wishes,

Your name

  1. 1 Thank you all for the voucher, and for the collection that must have taken some organising. It is going towards the trip we have been threatening for years.

Questions people actually ask

How do you thank colleagues for a retirement gift?

Name the gift, say what you will do with it, and thank them for the working years as well as the present. Specifics do the same job here as they do in the card you were given.

Do you have to write a thank you note for a retirement gift?

For a personal gift, yes, and handwritten if you can. For a departmental collection, one note to the organiser and a short group message covers it properly.

How long do you have to send a retirement thank you note?

Two weeks is the comfortable window. After that send it anyway with a single line acknowledging the delay and no long apology.
