What Men Should Wear to a Funeral
Dark, plain, covered. A suit is the default but it is not required — a dark jacket over a collared shirt is correct at almost every service in the UK, US, Ireland and Australia.
- If you own a suit
- Dark suit — black, charcoal or navy. White or pale plain shirt. Dark tie, plain or a small pattern. Black or dark brown leather shoes, polished.
- If you do not
- Dark trousers, a dark jacket or plain dark jumper, a collared shirt. No tie needed. This is normal and nobody will remark on it.
- The one thing to get right
- Shoes. Trainers are the most noticed mistake at any funeral. Any dark flat shoe beats the smartest trainer.
- If you are a pallbearer
- A jacket you can move in, and shoes with grip. You will be carrying weight on uneven ground, sometimes on grass.
The tie
- 1
Plain black is never wrong.
- 2
Dark navy, charcoal or deep burgundy are all correct.
- 3
A small repeated pattern is fine. A novelty tie, a bright stripe or a club tie is not, unless the family asked for it.
- 4
No tie at all is acceptable at most services now, particularly a cremation or a celebration of life.
Shirt and jumper
- 5
White, pale blue or pale grey. Plain.
- 6
Collar buttoned, and iron it — creases read louder than colour.
- 7
A plain dark crew-neck jumper over a collared shirt is a genuinely good answer if you have no jacket.
- 8
Avoid short sleeves in a chapel, even in summer. Roll them at the wake if you need to.
Coats, and standing outside
Most services move outdoors at least once, and nothing pauses for weather.
- 9
A dark overcoat you can keep on throughout.
- 10
A plain umbrella — dark or clear, not the branded golf one.
- 11
For a burial, shoes with some grip. Leather soles on wet grass are a real problem at exactly the wrong moment.
Younger men and boys
- 12
Dark trousers and a dark jumper is completely sufficient. No teenager needs a suit.
- 13
Clean dark shoes matter more than anything else in the outfit.
- 14
If a young man wants to wear his father’s tie or jacket, let him. That is not a dress-code question.
Questions people actually ask
Do men have to wear a suit to a funeral?
No. A dark jacket over a collared shirt, or a plain dark jumper, is appropriate at the large majority of services. Turning up matters more than tailoring.
Can a man wear navy or grey instead of black to a funeral?
Yes. Navy and charcoal are as correct as black and nobody will register the difference.
Is a black shirt acceptable at a funeral?
It is allowed but it reads more evening than mourning. A pale shirt under a dark jacket is the safer look.
